Active galactic nuclei are supermassive black holes at the center of certain galaxies. As matter falls into these black holes, enormous amounts of energy are released, making active galactic nuclei, or AGN, one of the most energetic phenomena that can be observed in space. University of Arizona astronomers have now produced the highest resolution direct images ever taken of an AGN in the infrared, using the Large Binocular Telescope Interferometer. 

Researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Germany were also involved in the study. The findings are published in the journal Nature Astronomy. 

"The Large Binocular Telescope Interferometer can be considered the first extremely large telescope, so it's very exciting to prove this is possible," said Jacob Isbell, a postdoctoral research associate at the U of A Steward Observatory and lead author of the Nature Astronomy paper. 

Every galaxy has a supermassive black hole at the center. Some of them are considered active while others are inactive, depending on how quickly material is falling onto them, Isbell said. There's a disk around the black hole that glows more brightly the more material there is. If this accretion disk glows brightly enough, it's called an active supermassive black hole. The AGN that exists in galaxy NGC 1068, which neighbors the Milky Way, is one of the nearest ones that is considered active. 

The Large Binocular Telescope is located on Mount Graham northeast of Tucson. It operates its two 8.4-meter mirrors independently, essentially functioning as two separate telescopes mounted side by side. The Large Binocular Telescope Interferometer combines the light from both mirrors, allowing for much higher resolution observations than would be possible with each mirror on its own. This imaging technique has been successfully used in the past to study volcanoes on the surface of Jupiter's moon Io. The Jupiter results encouraged the researchers to use the interferometer to look at an AGN. 

"The AGN within the galaxy NGC 1068 is especially bright, so it was the perfect opportunity to test this method," Isbell said. "These are the highest resolution direct images of an AGN taken so far."

The Large Binocular Interferometer Team is led by Steve Ertel, associate astronomer of Steward Observatory. Through the interferometer, the team was able to observe several cosmic phenomena going on simultaneously in the AGN. 

The bright disk around the supermassive black hole releases a lot of light, which pushes dust away like many tiny sails, a phenomenon known as radiation pressure. The images revealed a dusty, outflowing wind caused by radiation pressure. Simultaneously, farther out, there was a lot of material that was way brighter than it should have been, considering it was illuminated only by the bright accretion disk. By comparing the new images to past observations, the researchers were able to tie this finding to a radio jet that's blasting through the galaxy, hitting and heating up clouds of molecular gas and dust. Radio jet feedback is the interaction between powerful jets of radiation and particles emitted from supermassive black holes and their surrounding environment.

Direct imaging with extremely large telescopes such as the Larger Binocular Telescope Interferometer and the upcoming 83.5 feet Giant Magellan Telescope located in Chile makes it possible to distinguish feedback from the radio jet and dusty wind simultaneously. Previously, the various processes were blended due to low resolution, but now it is possible to view their individual impact, Isbell said.

The study shows that the environments of AGN can be complex, and the new findings help better understand AGN's interaction with their host galaxies.

"This type of imaging can be used on any astronomical object," Isbell said. "We've already started looking at disks around stars or very large, evolved stars, which have dusty envelopes around them."

大学教員あるあるで、この時期は「採点フェス」と言うらしい。採点と祭典との掛詞だそうだが、恥ずかしながら最近はじめて知ったのだ。今日は1年次必修科目「社会貢献論」の採点作業、240名分のレポートをチェックする。普段授業用に使っている赤ボールペンがあえなく最後を迎え、デスク備え付けの臨時のもので急場をしのぐ。点数化した後はスプレッドシートに入力、最終的には教学センターのWebシステムで登録する。さぁ、明日も頑張ろう。

5時15分起床。

日誌書く。

アオサそば＋そば湯＋ヨーグルト。

2男はオフだが、ご飯に余裕があったので4人分の弁当を用意する。

3男と一緒に出勤する。

今日の作業、まずは「社会貢献論」の採点、すでに個人ごとにレポートをまとめてあるので後はチェックするだけ。それをスプレッドシートに入力し、他の要素と集計して点数化、なんとか昼までに仕上げる。

ランチは弁当＋野菜ジュース。

午後は、「情報機器の操作Ⅱ」の採点作業、こちらは授業時の評価対象データが既にあり、人数も少ないので楽勝。

次は「インターンシップ」、こちらはすでに資料が用意してあるのでWebに登録するだけ。

退出して3男の迎え、16時にポリテクセンター京都に着くと丁度玄関に出てくるところだった。

Come penso altre persone avranno fatto, ho visto questo drama solo per Xiao Zhan. Anche se sapevo che aveva una parte relegata verso la fine, ho voluto vederlo lo stesso perché... beh, parliamo di Xiao Zhan.

Ma al di là di lui, questo drama mi è piaciuto fin dall'inizio. Quando ho cominciato a guardarlo, non mi ci è voluto molto per dimenticare XZ e immergermi nella storia che stavo vedendo.

Però devo dire che quando il personaggio di XZ entra -finalmente!- in scena, le cose si fanno davvero più interessanti lol.

Prima di tutto ci tengo a dire che trovo questo drama molto bilanciato ed equilibrato: è un ottimo mix tra serietà, comicità, intrighi, complotti, amore, amicizia, combattimenti, morte, vendetta e chi più ne ha più ne metta.

La serie è davvero godibile, ma a mio parere si entra davvero nel vivo dell’azione soltanto nella storyline finale, che mi è piaciuta davvero un sacco.

Come ogni altro dramone cinese storico-wuxia, i personaggi sono una caterva. A volte ho fatto fatica a capire di chi stessero parlando perché non ricordavo i nomi, ma su questo aspetto la serie ha fatto un lavoro più attento ed accurato rispetto a Word of honor sono ancora traumatizzata : i personaggi vengono presentati senza fretta e sono tutti contestualizzati.

E parlando proprio dei personaggi penso che siano uno dei punti migliori del drama: sono caratterizzati bene, sono umani, sfaccettati, sono astuti, intelligenti e i complotti volano a livelli altissimi. Se c’è una cosa che sto adorando dei drama che sto vedendo quest’anno è l’intelligenza dei personaggi: non so come farò a scegliere il personaggio più intelligente nel quiz finale.

Il protagonista è Fan Xian, un giovane leale, astuto e intelligente, che si ritrova invischiato in mezzo a intrighi, complotti e attentati alla sua vita. Mentre cerca di sopravvivere a tutto questo, l’unica cosa che desidera è potersi godere la vita in pace e serenità. Da qui il titolo il drama. Fan Xian è stato per me un lead convenzionale e originale allo stesso tempo. E’ quel tipo di protagonista che non fa differenza tra le persone e tratta la sua guardia come un amico, tuttavia non ho mai sentito la noia o la pesantezza dell’eroe senza macchia e senza paura, perché quello che mi è piaciuto di lui è stata la sua messa in scena: è simpatico, intelligente, e quando c’è da complottare diventa spietato.

Oltre a lui sono tanti i personaggi che mi sono piaciuti, ma il mio cuore l’ho dato al Secondo Principe: enigmatico, stravagante è fuori come un balcone, misterioso, affascinante, astuto, le sue interazioni con il fratello il Principe Ereditario mi hanno sempre fatto molto ridere.

Yan Bingyun, il personaggio interpretato da XZ. mi è piaciuto molto: talmente leale e fedele al regno del Qing da risultare comico in alcuni momenti e insopportabile in altri; freddo, determinato, testardo, risulta ammirevole e detestabile allo stesso tempo, e questo rispecchia i combattimenti interiori che lo stesso personaggio attraversa. XZ assolutamente promosso nella recitazione.

I villain mi sono piaciuti un sacco, e una cosa che ho adorato di questa serie è che non ho mai avuto l’impressione che ci fosse un super cattivo che l’eroe di turno doveva sconfiggere. Qui è tutto molto equilibrato, ognuno ha delle motivazioni, e lo stesso Fan Xian si ritrova a fare cose che non possono etichettarlo come un eroe immacolato.

Voglio dare alcune note di merito: Xiao En, un finto cattivo con cui è impossibile non empatizzare, e l’Imperatore del Qing, insolito e particolare per essere un imperatore, intelligente e spietato nei suoi obiettivi.

A livello tecnico la serie è fatta bene, non ho notato nulla di eccezionale ma non ho niente di cui lamentarmi. Ma mi è piaciuta molto la particolarità del drama rispetto alla sua ambientazione e l’atmosfera di mistero, ma non aggiungo altro.

Per quanto mi riguarda ci sono due cose che non mi hanno catturata: la lead, e la storia d’amore. La prima è semplicemente il personaggio meno interessante della serie, e la seconda è un po’ banale, un po’ cliché, un po’ ridicola, con il lead che si innamora della lead a prima vista e nel giro di due episodi ha deciso che è la donna della sua vita e la vuole sposare. In questa ship mancano il contrasto, la chimica e l’angst, e una vera e propria costruzione. 

Il tutto risulta ancora più ridicolo quando penso a come Fan Xian abbia avuto molta più chimica, interazione e tensione sessuale con praticamente tutti gli altri personaggi femminili della serie.

Tuttavia ho apprezzato molto come la lead e la storia d’amore non siano stati centrali, ma anzi abbiano loro dato uno spazio limitato: gli sceneggiatori di questa serie sono persone intelligenti.

Riguardo il finale... mi ha fatto volare. C’è solo una cosa che mi ha fatta storcere un po’ il naso perché credo che siano caduti in un cliché con il protagonista, ma a parte questo ho volato. Nell’episodio finale, nel giro di venti minuti, Joy of life mi ha regalato due colpi di scena che sfido chiunque riuscire a vedere arrivare, ma totalmente sensati e ragionevoli. Questi sono i colpi di scena che io adoro.

Ci tengo comunque a dire che prima di dare alcuni giudizi definitivi su certe cose attendo di vedere la seconda stagione.

Perché sì, questa storia necessita di una seconda stagione visto che il bello è appena cominciato.

Non ho molto da dire in realtà per la parte spoiler, soltanto che Yan Bingyun che trafigge Fan Xian è una cosa che mi ha fatta mettere le mani nei capelli e lasciata di sasso per un quarto d’ora. Non me lo aspettavo proprio. Non so cosa abbia spinto Yan Bingyun ad agire, se la sua fedeltà verso il Qing o se magari è partita la collab. tra lui e Fan Xian ed è tutto un loro piano, e non saprei cosa sperare. Perché se ha agito di testa sua, significa che nella seconda stagione sarà contro il protagonista e questo rende le cose davvero interessanti; invece se è d’accordo con Fan Xian questo risulta meno scoppiettante a livello di trama ma degno di nota per l’evoluzione di Yan Bingyun.

E non so se essere più in hype per questo colpo di scena o quello riguardante il Secondo Principe, che già amavo e che dopo la rivelazione finale ho finito per adorare completamente.
